Metal roofs and metal work are an integral part of the industry and we are capable of meeting any challenge. Some roofs are made entirely of metal and some roofs rely on metal components to tie the system together. Shingled and slate roofs are full of metal elements that complete the roofing system. Often these components are not visible but important none the less. Visible elements such as chimney flashings connect the roof to the masonry. Flashings that are not so conspicuous like step flashing create a water tight union between roofs and side walls. Our copper smiths hand-fabricate these elements in the field to custom fit the metal for the application at hand.
True metal roofs are an excellent choice for many reasons. Metal roofs are very light weight with long life spans. This type of roofing is environmentally friendly and almost always made from 100% recycled materials whether it’s copper, aluminum, zinc or steel. These roofs are also an excellent base for solar energy options.
Standing seam and flat seam roofs can be used in conjunction with other types of roofs or as an entire project. Often bay windows will receive standing seam to lend ornamentation to the house. In other situations portions of a roof system may be to low in pitch for shingles or slate and metal is used in place. What ever the situation may be the importance of metal work and the level of expertise in the craftsmanship is undeniable.
The history of metal work in roofing traces back to the Romans. The Romans used lead for roofing and plumbing applications. The word plumber actually comes from the Latin word for lead “plumbus.” In Mid Evil times those who install the lead roofs were still referred to as plumbers for this reason. Many centuries of metal fabrication have lead to great knowledge and experience that has been passed down to the modern day craftsman. New England is home to the most famous copper smith of all Paul Revere. Revere Copper is the oldest continuously running manufacturing company in the United States. Started in 1801 and still producing the worlds finest copper. We use only Revere brand copper on every project unless another metal is specifically requested.
