Wood Shingles: Durable, Breathable, Affordable

Cedar shakes and shingles have become a standard that the industry distributes readily across the country. Light-weight and durable, each year cedar shakes and shingles rival asphalt for new installation. As a more environmentally sound decision, the wood roof can be molded into many roof planes, breathes well-through each season, and with minor maintenance can last nearly 40 years. Cedar roofs hold up very well in the Nor’easters common to our coast line due to their resistance to high winds. Cedar also retains very little heat which helps keep the home cool during the hot summer months. Cedar can breathe unlike most other species of wood which gives it the ability to protect our homes.

Brief History of Wood Shingles

In America, true hand-split shingles were used until the early 1800’s when mill production lines took over. In time, wood shingles became a sought after style linked with New England architecture and traditional design. Roof construction and installation methods haven’t drastically changed. Today most wood roofs consist of either a red or yellow cedar shingle and can be adjusted, in style and grade, to suit the expectations of the project.
